Description
Despite its name (Dolce means sweet in Italian) this variety is not sweet. The name comes from the fact that it ripens early and the birds just love the sweetness of the grapes before any of the other varieties are ready. In the Piedmont region of Italy, Dolcetto is third in rank among varieties, losing favor to Nebbiolo and Barbera. In Santa Barbara County we grow excellent Dolcetto that makes a full-bodied wine with great fruit. The acid is a bit less dominant than other Italian reds making it relatively soft for an Italian variety.
Mika says:
Lighter tannins than most Italian red wines. Italian sausages, all meat pizza, biscuits and gravy pestos, eggplant parmigiana.
